Workshop B: Using a Positive Physical Approach

A 2-hour workshop delivered by Alison Watson-Shields, PAC® Certified Independent Trainer, using Positive Approach to Care® curriculum and video content developed by Teepa Snow.

About this workshop

How we physically approach, touch, and move with someone living with dementia matters enormously — and yet it’s one of the aspects of care that receives the least attention. This workshop changes that.

Workshop B focuses on two of the most important practical skills in the Positive Approach to Care® framework: Positive Physical Approach™ (PPA™) and Hand-under-Hand™ (HUH™). These techniques shift the experience of care from something that is done to a person, to something that is done with them — reducing anxiety, building trust, and improving quality of life for both the person living with dementia and the people supporting them.

The session develops the observational skills needed to notice when someone’s distress is growing before it escalates, and to respond in ways that feel safe, respectful, and genuinely helpful.

Interactive and experiential throughout, using video content from Teepa Snow, role play, and group activities.

What you will learn

By the end of this workshop you will be able to:

  • Apply Positive Physical Approach™ and Hand-under-Hand™ techniques in everyday care situations
  • Understand the importance of doing with rather than doing to — and what that looks like in practice
  • Develop observational skills to recognise signals of unmet need and growing distress before they escalate
  • Demonstrate ways to help the person feel productive, valued, and in control
  • Respond to physical resistance and distress with confidence and compassion

Who is this workshop for?

Workshop B is particularly well suited to care home staff, domiciliary care workers, and anyone who provides hands-on physical support to someone living with dementia. It is also valuable for family carers who want to feel more confident and less anxious in their day-to-day caring role.

It can be taken as a standalone session or combined with Workshop A and/or Workshop C as part of a broader programme of learning.
