Workshop C: Seeing GEMS® as More than Just Loss

A 2-hour workshop delivered by Alison Watson-Shields, PAC® Certified Independent Trainer, using Positive Approach to Care® curriculum and video content developed by Teepa Snow.

About this workshop

When we think about dementia progression, it’s easy to focus on what’s being lost. Teepa Snow’s GEMS® model offers a different perspective — one that looks at what remains, what still matters, and how the right support in the right setting can help every person continue to shine.

The GEMS® model uses the characteristics of precious jewels as a compassionate and dignified framework for understanding where someone is in their dementia journey. Each GEM — Sapphire, Diamond, Emerald, Amber, Ruby, and Pearl — describes a different state of ability and brain function, helping carers and professionals adjust their expectations, adapt their communication, and provide support that genuinely fits the person in front of them.

This workshop introduces the model, explores what each GEMS® state looks like in practice, and develops the skills needed to use this understanding to respond more effectively to changing needs and distressing situations.

Interactive and experiential throughout, using video content from Teepa Snow, discussion, role play, and group activities.

What you will learn

By the end of this workshop you will be able to:

  • Describe normal ageing and the stages of dementia, and identify the corresponding GEMS® state for each
  • Use the GEMS® model to guide positive, supportive communication between carer and the person living with dementia
  • Analyse and respond to unmet needs that lead to distress or challenging behaviour as the condition progresses
  • Apply effective combinations of multi-modal helping techniques that emphasise preserved abilities
  • Shift your focus from what someone can no longer do, to what they can still do — and how to build on it

Who is this workshop for?

Workshop C is suitable for family carers, care home and domiciliary care staff, social care professionals, and anyone who wants a more structured framework for understanding and responding to dementia progression. It works particularly well for those who have already completed an introductory dementia session and want to deepen their understanding.

It can be taken as a standalone session or combined with Workshop A and/or Workshop B as part of a broader programme of learning.
